Quann Park News:
The Madison Board of Park Commissioners
Approves Use of the Dog Park Fund to
Completely Fence Quann Off-Leash Dog Park.
A year of lobbying by the quann4dogs advocacy group has paid off! Quann off-leash dog park will soon be completely fenced. The Parks department promises to complete work on Quann Dog Park before the opening of the Goodman Pool in July of 2006. The Parks department hopes to have the fencing in place before winter of 2005.
Fencing plans: Perimeter fences along Olin-Quann Parkway (formerly Expo Drive) and along the Quann bike path will connect the existing fence on the south (between the dog park and soccer field) and the Madison city buildings fences. This will completely enclose the off-leash dog park. The paved path/creek corridor north of the Wingra Creek bridge entrance will become official off-leash dog park space. Two additional fences will run from the perimeter fence down to Wingra creek to semi-enclose this area. This path/creek corridor area of the off-leash dog park will provide handicapped accessibility on the paved path and be the new location of the dog beach. The plans as approved by the Board of Park Commissioners include a separate small-dog/puppy area. Sadly, those plans are currently in limbo due to objections by the Alliant Energy Center.
The exact and final details of the fencing are still being worked out. Our members have established lines of communication with the Madison Parks staff and advise them of the dog park users desires.
Quann Off-leash Dog Park will be impacted by the following 2005 Alliant
Energy Center events:
This list was compiled by the Alliant Energy Center (AEC) to notify
the city about possible CLOSURE of Olin-Quann Parkway (formerly Expo
Drive) to the TENNIS COURT PARKING LOT in Quann Park. More
events may be added as the AEC firms up its summer schedule. The
AEC has the right to use Quann Park because it holds a 50 year lease
on the land. The events which have historically CLOSED the Quann off-leash
dog park are noted in Bold.

CAUTION!
The earth-moving north of the dog park in Quann consists of fly-ash contaminated
soil from the East Wash reconstruction. Fly ash is the residue from
coal burning and is high in HEAVY METALS and therefore must be disposed
of in a landfill. City Engineering does not consider this an inhalation
danger because the ash is well mixed with soil. However, eating the
soil could be toxic. Please prevent your dogs from going into the construction
area, for their own safety. City engineering has put up an orange mesh
fence to help keep dogs out. There should not be heavy machinery moving
on the Quann roads due to this project.
